The
labour-related problems which have delayed construction
of the Shayamoya Hilltop Housing project in Cato Manor have
been resolved. Building work is now forging ahead rapidly,
and approximately 160 housing units will be ready for occupation
by the end of November.
According to BESG’s Laura Hunt, a number of show units in
the project will be ready for viewing this month. “The electricity
people have just moved on site. The roofing people are also
working faster than usual before the heavy rainy season
starts. We are confident that we will hand over the remaining
160 units in February 2001,” she said. The project has created
an estimated 400 jobs, 90% of which have been filled by
local people. Workers on the site are also receiving on-the-job-training
in a new plastering method which is known as plaster tech.
Shayamoya is the first housing project of its kind to provide
affordable rental accommodation. It will be run by the Shayamoya
Housing Association, which includes lease-holders living
in the project.
