Fire
guts businesses in Cato Crest

Traders in the Cato Crest Informal
settlement have suffered a devastating setback as their businesses
were razed down by fire. Goods to the value of R20 000 were lost
in the fire. No-one knows what the cause of the fire might have
been. The future looks bleak for the traders as all their businesses
were not insured.
Ntombi Ngcongo one of the traders
who was dealt a heavy blow by the fire insists that the fire was
not an act of sabotage. “We have no reason to suspect anyone within
our circle of traders because we are all on friendly terms. It
does not appear as an act of robbery or vandalism. We are all
mystified by the fire but only time will reveal the truth,” said
Ntombi.
This is the second time that these
business premises were gutted down by fire. Last year the fire
claimed the life of 19 year old Ntokozo Malimela who was acting
as a security guard at the time.
CMDA’s Spatial Planning Manager,
Adrian Masson has encouraged the traders to apply for alternative
trading space at either the container park at Cato Crest or the
market along Bellair Road.
The CMDA has offered to assist the
traders by providing a container for the safekeeping of goods
after trading hours. They will also provide each trader with a
trunk and a gazebo to use for trade.
The CMDA has earmarked the piece
of land that the traders are using for the development of an urban
park.
