Soccer pundits who have been frustrated by the lack of a body to organise and manager soccer issues have had their prayers answered. A new soccer body known as the Cato Manor Soccer Association has been established. It is affiliated to SAFA, the national soccer body.

The local association has already been given the go-ahead by 24 teams who are willing to play under their banner. The formation of the association is seen as a big leap for the development of the game. More often soccer loving youngsters miss out on soccer clinics because there is no formalised structure. Coaches, referees and team managers stand a good chance of reaping benefits from the association as they will be able to attend development workshops.

Commented Thami Dladla, secretary of the association: “Part of the reason we established the association is to allow for continuity. The previous competitions that we have held indicated the need for a formal structure. Teams will get an opportunity to make and correct mistakes.”

The association hopes to start its programme by mid-May when a competition based on a league system will be introduced. There will be a lot of incentives for teams, which will use sportsfields that have recently been constructed in various areas of Cato Manor.

Teams that have not registered must get in touch with members of the interim committee which is made up of the following people: Vusi Nduli (president), Thami Dladla (secretary), Phumlani Nyawo, Phumlani Phewa, Thandi... (treasurer), Khetha Mabrush Shusha and Boykie Khanyile (facilitator).

A golf course in Cato Manor?

concerning the construction of a mini-golf
course in Cato Manor.

Have you been itching to play golf but do not know where to go and learn?

Umkhumbane Golf Club has approached the CMDA to include a mashee golf course so that aspiring golfers may get an opportunity to play the sport less expensively. A mashee course needs only a five-hectare piece of land.

Although construction of a golf course is not part of the plans of developing Cato Manor, the CMDA did not rule out using some of the grasslands that are vacant near the SPCA. However there are two considerations that may hamper the development of a golf course i.e. the environmentalists and the safety of the community. There is always danger that someone may be harmed as a result of a stray ball.

Umkhumbane Golf Club representative, Sthembiso Msweli, said: “There is a desire among the growing generation to play golf but it is too expensive. Without sponsorship the youth in Cato Manor will not be able to explore their potential. We need at least a mini course if the game is to take any shape.”

Members of the Umkhumbane Golf Club were part of the development programme initiated by the Westville Driving Range. They were initiated into the game through a six-week programme.
