Greater Cato Manor covers an area of some 1 800 hectares, of which 900 hectares are suitable for development. It is situated in one of the most accessible parts of the eThekwini metropolitan area (EMA): between two major freeways (the N3 and M7) and bisected by the major north-south route (the N2), it is only seven kilometres from Durban’s Central Business District (CBD) and ten kilometres from several of the EMA’s major employment centres.

The area has the potential to house between 157 000 and 179 000 people as well as associated social facilities, open space areas and sites where economic opportunities are generated. It is characterised by undulating, broken topography with several streams and rivers flowing through it, presenting difficult topographical conditions in some areas.

Durban lies on South Africa’s eastern seaboard in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province and is home to some three million people. It is the main economic centre for the KZN region and its port is the busiest in South Africa.
